The town of Dorset is a place well-worth visiting while vacationing at Buttermilk Falls Resort. Just 20-minutes north of Buttermilk Falls, along Hwy 35, it's a very scenic drive, especially during the fall colours. Visitors to this pretty little town on the beautiful Lake of Bays will discover plenty of attractions, restaurants, shops and galleries. The town sits on the border where Muskoka and Haliburton Counties meet. The Lake of Bays waterway runs right through the centre of town with a single lane bridge that crosses the narrows joining Dorset's main street in the middle.
When in Dorset, be sure to visit the Dorset Heritage Museum, the Bigwin Steamship, Robinson's General Store, and of course, the Dorset Observation Tower.
Dorset's famous tower sits upon a mountain top, just outside of town. It has been a Haliburton landmark and popular tourist attraction for generations, especially during the fall colours. Open from mid May through October, visitors can climb the 30 metre (100 foot) tower to the observation deck perched142 metres (465 feet) above the Lake of Bays for a breathtaking that stretches for miles. The original tower, built in 1922 was part of a network of observation towers that served to protect valuable stands of timber from fires. It provided a viewing radius of over 300 square miles. By 1960, when fire towers became obsolete due to advances in technology, the Dorset Tower had become important to the local economy due to the many visitors it attracted. The replacement tower, which stands today, was built in 1967 as a scenic lookout. A network of scenic trails surrounds the tower, along with a picnic area, kiosk which sells t-shirts, sweatshirts and caps bearing the Dorset Tower logo, gatehouse and parking. When in Dorset, don't be surprised if you happen to see the occasional black bear or two. And before heading back to Buttermilk Falls, take a look inside the famous Robinson's General Store. Voted 'the best country store in Canada', this unique store has an unbelievable selection of merchandise, including giftware, clothing, hardware, souvenirs, and groceries. A visit to Robinson's has been an Ontario cottage country tradition for decades.
